![]() ![]() Many Bible scholars believe it was written by Mordecai although the book never says who the author actually was. It doesn’t appear that Esther actually wrote this book because if she did, she wouldn’t have likely named it after herself. The Book of Esther never mentions God by name, there is never the word “prayer” uttered, and the only spiritual discipline that is mentioned is fasting but that never says anything about prayer and fasting. When I go through difficult times, I too am often surprised in the end that I made it through: I’m tougher than I imagine. Here are 5 important lessons that I learned from the Book of Esther. Being in such a difficult situation showed him how he could be. While he is still afraid, as is Becky, he manages to keep his wits about him instead of panicking. Tom showed his true colors when he and Becky were lost in the cave. Bring extra food when spelunking, or, adversity makes you stronger. And the fact that Tom felt so horrible for so long only teaches us that telling the truth will help take away that horrible burden. Telling the truth feels good. The entire Injun Joe murder situation is a bit heavy for my son.How am I treating my kids? Would I still treat them that way if today were their last? We should remember those things before our loved ones are gone. They wished they had not “whipped him” or rejected him (Becky wished she still had that knob!). All those crazy things he did? People wished they had not been so hard on him. What pain he must have caused! (If he were a real person, that is.) But his pretend death reminded all the people he associated with that the little things really don’t matter so much. Meanwhile, his friends and family mourn him and regret. Tom Sawyer really does not think: he pretends he’s dead so he can attend his own funeral. Think of your words and actions as if they were your last. Our imaginations can grow when we give them time to do so. His aunt did not hover or overly supervise his play, and Tom did not have a list of after school activities to attend to. Other times, he stayed at school and enjoyed some quiet time with his friend, Becky Thatcher. Sometimes, Tom skipped school and played Robin Hood with his friend. To school and back home again, Tom was without supervision and a schedule of regular events. ![]()
As the legends spread, the word ḥaššāšīn passed through Italian and French and appeared in English as assassin in the 1500s, already with meanings like "treacherous killer. Marco Polo spun a tale of how young Assassins were given a potion and made to yearn for paradise-their reward for dying in action-by being given a life of sensual pleasure before their secret missions. When the Crusaders returned to Europe, they embellished upon what they had heard about the Nizaris from the group's enemies and told sensational stories about the ḥaššāšīn or Assassins. Attacks on several leaders among the Crusaders were also attributed to Nizari agents. ![]() The Nizaris mounted resistance to this persecution, and one of their most formidable weapons against the Seljuks was the threat of sudden execution by secret agents. Sunni accounts of the Nizaris accused them of all sorts of irreligious practices, and one term of abuse applied to the Nizaris was the Arabic word ḥaššāšīn, meaning "hashish users." Reliable sources, however, offer no evidence of hashish use by Nizaris. The Nizaris opposed the rule of the Seljuk dynasty and the Abbasid caliphs, who were Sunni and regarded the Nizaris as unorthodox outcasts. European legends about a murderous, drug-crazed sect called the Assassins grew up around the Nizaris, a group of Ismaili Shi'ite Muslims that held strongholds in Iran and Syria from the 11th to the 13th century. But I’ve played all 11 mainline games and here is the definitive ranking. ![]() Word History: The history of the word assassin shows how legends can influence the development of words as powerfully as facts. |
